“You don’t make a photograph with just a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.” -Ansel Adams
When I was 14 years old I got my first fuji digital camera! It was small and now I would think it was silly, but looking back on that Christmas morning and taking my first sunrise picture (my siblings like to wake up early) I just had this feeling that was so natural to be holding something like that in my hands. Capturing something that you can only see again and again by looking at a photograph.
At that point in time my dad was trying to start his own photography business and I wanted to be part of it! I learned so much in that first couple of years, that most of what I know is because my dad taught me the ins and outs of cameras and how they work! Then I graduated high school and went away to Crown College in Powell TN, but it wasn’t for photography. It was for teaching. I had always had a passion for teaching, and that’s where I thought the Lord was leading me at the time.
After some personal things I decided to come home, back to VA. I was a preschool teacher of a three year old class for a couple of years, till one day…a senior asked me to take her pictures for the year book. I ended up doing three seniors that year! I knew that I just had to try and start this on my own! Something was calling me!
In the next couple of years things started to fall into place! I was shooting for fun and surely not as much as I wanted to! Then someone told me, Well you need a name for your photography business!! Everyone wanted me to use my name but sadly my first and last name can be misspelled very easily so I thought about it long and hard.
I happened to be cleaning up some things and found a book that we used in my youth group. Different By Design. A book from West Coast Baptist College. The book was about how teenagers, and everybody for that matter, and how God made each and every one of us differently and with different talents! I wanted my business to reflect that I have a talent (not bragging) from God. He gave me the ability to be able to hold that info in my head, and yet I can’t remember phone numbers anymore!!
Since Different By Design Photography has started, I have had the opportunity to capture so many beautiful and magical moments. Being able to stop time and then look at it later still blows my mind!!
I do not take this job lightly and I am constantly trying to better myself as this business is ALWAYS growing!
I always like to tell people, my family and my friends are my life, my photography is my passion…but I will never forget what He did for me!
